CAAV suggests more time for piloting biometric authentication
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has proposed continuing pilot application of biometric authentication (facial recognition) at airports’ check-in desks.
The high-tech method aims to contribute to ensuring social order and security, reduce time for check-in procedures, and increase accuracy. Facial recognition technology can also improve the prevention and detection of passengers using fake documents, and detect those who are banned from flying or wanted criminals that cross borders.
Recently, the authority hosted a meeting to discuss issues related to legal regulations on applying the technology.
CAAV reported that the pilot application of facial recognition technology at Cat Bi international airport in the northern city of Hai Phong has not clearly demonstrated its advantages and disadvantages, suggesting extending the piloting period.
The authority proposed amendments and supplements to regulations on passengers’ documents for air travel and personal information to encourage the use of documents integrated with the e-identification and authentication account system or the citizen identification data system, and passports, and building clearer regulations on collecting, managing and using the information of passengers during the check-in process.
CAAV has also requested agencies and units operating in aviation to urgently implement its directives, thus speeding up the implementation of the project on developing the application of population database, e-identification, and e-authentication for the national digital transformation in the 2022-2025 period with a vision to 2030. /.
