Da Nang Customs seizes over 6.6 tons of suspected pangolin scales and ivory

VCN – In the first days in 2022, Da Nang Customs Department led and coordinated with other competent forces to inspect a shipment from Nigeria to Tien Sa Port in Da Nang, and detected a large quantity of suspected pangolin scales and ivory listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Da Nang Customs seizes over 6.6 tons of suspected pangolin scales and ivory

Infringing goods.

Da Nang Seaport Customs Branch under Da Nang Customs Department discovered a shipment in container No. GESU6160232 under the bill of lading 212882912, which was declared as cashew nuts, transported from Nigeria to Tien Sa Port on January 5, 2022, with signs of smuggled ivory and pangolin scales.

On January 11, 2022, the local customs branch issued the Decision and coordinated with the Customs Enforcement Team, Central Anti-smuggling Enforcement Unit, Da Nang City Police to inspect the shipment.

After three days of inspection and examination, the competent forces detected over 456kg suspected ivory and 6.2 tons of suspected pangolin scales listed in the CITES.

Currently, the local customs branch is working with relevant agencies to investigate and handle the case.
