An inspection team of the European Commission (EC) will visit Vietnam from November 4-14 to assess the country’s efforts in realizing the EC’s recommendations on fighting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing

This was announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang during a regular press conference in Hanoi on October 17.

During their stay in Vietnam, the officials from the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG – MARE) are due to pay courtesy visits to Vietnamese senior leaders, have working sessions with representatives of relevant agencies, including the Directorate of Fisheries, and conduct field trips to a number of localities, Hang said.

In recent times, Vietnamese agencies, localities and organisations have drastically implemented solutions to build a sustainable and responsible fishery sector , and keep in check IUU fishing on the basis of the EC’s recommendations which yielded positive outcomes, the official said.

She also affirmed Vietnam's readiness to coordinate with the EC in combating IUU fishing.
