Find export markets to save poultry industry

VCN - Poultry prices have continuously dropped sharply. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), besides promoting trade and consumption in the domestic market, seeking to further promote poultry exports is one of the important solutions to solve the backlog.

Pham Van Dong, General Director of the Animal Health Department (MARD), said Vietnam has been allowed to export poultry to seven foreign markets.

Expanding markets is difficult. To boost exports, Vietnam must simultaneously meet the requirements of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and target markets.

“Therefore, once a market has been penetrated, it is necessary to make the most of the opportunities, avoiding the situation when goods are abundant, even congested due to the pandemic, there is no international market for consumption,” said Dong.

The leader of the Animal Health Department said that in the future the department would review the markets to plan specific consumption for each country to boost exports, first of all would be Korea, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

“For the remaining more difficult markets, we need more time to prepare a plan carefully; simultaneously, it is necessary to have close coordination between Vietnam’s and other countries’ management agencies and enterprises," said Dong.

Regarding the export of processed chicken and poultry products, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that Binh Phuoc province has facilitated C.P. Vietnam Corporation to build two animal feed factories, four chicken slaughtering and processing factories, six hatcheries, 10 broiler farms, and a veterinary medicine factory.

Tien suggested that Binh Phuoc province continued to pay attention and facilitate C.P. Vietnam Corporation to ensure their production progress in the future; simultaneously, it is necessary to closely coordinate with the Animal Health Department and C.P. Vietnam Corporation to build a disease-free zone.

"It is a decisive factor in exports," said Tien.

From a business perspective, Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of C.P. Vietnam, said that in the future, the Japanese market would be one of the main target markets for CPV Food Co., Ltd in Binh Phuoc (a member of C.P Vietnam Corporation).

According to Tien, C.P. Vietnam has been involved in manufacturing in Vietnam for years and has made many contributions in technology, markets, products, and management in the livestock and aquaculture industry. This firm has invested huge resources with large-scale production chains, but the number of products is still low and not commensurate with its capacity.

In the current context, Tien asked C.P. Vietnam to focus on three major issues in the future, including: ensuring the construction of hatcheries and broiler farms on schedule; closely coordinating with the Animal Health Department and the locality to fully meet the regulations on disease-free zones; and understanding the export markets’ needs thoroughly.

Tien also requested the Animal Health Department to ensure the construction of a disease-free area on schedule. Trade promotion in the context of a sharp drop in poultry prices has obtained initial results. In the future, it should be continuously implemented, especially to facilitate C.P. Vietnam to promote exports.

"Export is also a solution to solve the backlog of goods now," said Tien.

According to the report of the Working Group 970 (MARD), from the beginning of the year to the end of August 2021, the total poultry flocks of 19 southern provinces and cities was estimated at 154.7 million heads, with an output of 343,000 tons, an increase of 3% over the same period in 2020. It is expected that the total herd in the remaining months will be 154 million heads, with an output of 171,000 tons. Egg production is estimated at 3,900 million eggs, up 7.8% over the same period in 2020. Estimated output in the remaining months is 2,000 million eggs.

Due to reduced demand and difficult circulation of goods, white feathered industrial chicken products are overgrown, leading to production stagnation and lack of stables to re-herd. Chicken prices in the Southeast and Mekong Delta are low, ranging from VND6,000 - 10,000/kg, while the production cost is VND27,000 - 29,000/kg.
