Investigation into smuggled ivory to be expanded

The seizure was the biggest the country has seen in recent years.

Considering the competent forces’ report to the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee on the discovery and prevention of the smuggling and illegal transportation of large amounts of ivory into Vietnam, Standing Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh, Head of the National Steering Committee 389, praised the achievements of Da Nang Customs Department, Da Nang City Public Security, Da Nang City Border Guard Command, the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department under the General Department of Customs and the Police Department of Environmental Crime Investigation under the Ministry of Public Security for their collaboration on the case.

The Deputy Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Public Security to direct Da Nang City Public Security to coordinate with relevant competent forces to promptly investigate the case and clarify the organisations and individuals involved, especially instigators, for strict handling according to the provisions of law.

The Deputy Prime Minister also asked ministries, sectors, localities and Steering Committee 389 at all levels to direct competent forces to focus on handling the situation, strengthening inspection, control, detection, prevention and strictly handle organisations and individuals who commit acts of smuggling and illegal transportation of goods across border areas, border gates and seaports into Vietnam.

Standing Office of the National Steering Committee 389 is assigned to monitor, urge the implementation and summarize the results to report to the National Steering Committee 389.

As reported, through professional operations, Da Nang Customs Department has discovered and coordinated with competent forces, including the Environmental Police Ministry Department of the Ministry of Public Security, Police Department of Environmental Crime Investigation, the Corruption and Smuggling Related Crime Investigation Police Department under Da Nang Public Security and Da Nang Port Border Guard and Central Region Anti-Smuggling Control Team under the Department of Anti-Smuggling and Investigation to inspect shipments suspected of containing banned goods.

The shipment of ivory came from Congo to Tien Sa Da Nang port. As a result, competent forces detected and seized more than 9.1 tonnes of illegal ivory hidden in pieces of timber.
