Localities intensify measures to cope with typhoon Goni
Deputy PM Dung made the statement during a meeting held on November 2 in Hanoi to discuss how to cope with the arrival of typhoon Goni, the 10th storm to hit the East Sea this year.
According to Deputy PM Dung, typhoon Goni has entered the East Sea and is forecast to dump large amounts of rainfall on central localities, an area of the country which has been hardest hit by recent flooding and landslides.
Military units and relevant forces have therefore been called upon to ensure the safety of hydropower reservoirs, along with irrigation and dyke systems, in line with regulations, while continuing to overcome the aftermath of typhoon Molave and the recent historic flooding.
Furthermore, Deputy PM Dung has requested that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment rapidly complete a warning map outlining the possible risks of landslides and flooding as a means of avoiding severe consequences in the near future.
Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre, said Typhoon Goni is likely to strengthen when passing to the south of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, before weakening into a tropical depression when making landfall in the coastal areas of Da Nang and Phu Yen provinces.
With Typhoon Goni anticipated to make landfall on November 5, it is expected to trigger immense rains in provinces such as Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Thua Thien Hue, Nghe An, Quang Tri, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai, as well as throughout the Central Highlands region, over the coming days.
At present, 49,585 fishing vessels have been notified regarding the path of typhoon Goni, while military forces have been asked to map out detailed scenarios in order to cope with possible landslides and severe flooding. This should be done by evacuating residents from areas susceptible to flooding as a means of minimising the loss of life and property.
