NA Chairwoman’s attendance at IPU-140 demonstrates Vietnam’s active role

National Assembly Chairwoman attends IPU-138 in Switzerland.

On April 6 morning (local time), the top Vietnamese legislator departed Brussels, Belgium, for Doha, Qatar, to attend the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU -140) and related meetings at the invitation of IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron, and Chairman of the Consultative Assembly of Qatar Ahmad Bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud.

Vietnam’s participation in the event is designed to further promote the role and position of the Vietnamese legislature at IPU, especially in the role of IPU Vice President for the 2018-2019 term.

It also aims to reaffirm the country’s commitment to actively participating in multilateral diplomatic activities, implementing external guidelines adopted at the 12th Party Congress.

Since Vietnam joined in April 1979, its active participation has been acknowledged by other members, as demonstrated by the strengthened relationship between the Vietnamese legislative body and other parliaments.

Vietnam hosted the 132nd IPU Assembly in April 2015, during which the Hanoi Declaration was adopted, contributing to mapping out the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development.

On the sidelines of the 140th IPU Assembly, the NA chief will have bilateral meetings with the IPU president, IPU Secretary-General, and other parliamentary leaders, and talk with Vietnamese Embassy staff in Doha, Qatar.
