More than 5 tons of pangolin scales were seized on May 23. |
The pangolin scales were packed in 151 sacks (including 146 black sacks) and hidden in a shipment of cashews to avoid detection by the competent forces.
Ngo Van Thuy, Head of the Team said that the shipment arrived at CMIT (Cai Mep-Ba Ria-Vung Tau) on May 22. Following the direction of the leaders of the General Department of Vietnam Customs and the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department, the Unit assigned officers to monitor and verify information related to this import shipment.

Following received information, on May 23, Thuy signed a decision for inspection by Unit 1, Division 2 under the Anti-smuggling and Investigation Department in coordination with Cai Mep Customs Branch.
As a result, 151 sacks of pangolin scales, weighing 5,264 kg were detected. These are banned goods for import and export under the Cites Convention.
The shipment was transported from Nigeria's Apapa Port on April 13 and docked at Vung Tau port on May 22. The consignee is Nam Ha Trading Services Company Limited, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City.
The case is currently being verified and investigated by Customs.
