On the morning of January 31, the 13th Party Central Committee convened its first plenum to elect the Politburo, the Party General Secretary, the Secretariat, the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission, and its Chairsperson.
The plenum took place one day after the 13th National Party Congress finalized the election of a new 200-member Party Central Committee.
During the meeting, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, 77, was re-elected for another five-year term. He became Party General Secretary in 2011, and was re-elected to the position in 2016.
Nguyen Phu Trong, born in 1944 in Hanoi’s Dong Anh District, joined the Communist Party in 1967 and holds a Ph.D degree in politics and a bachelor degree in literature.
He was General Secretary of the Party Central Committee in the 11th, 12th and 13th tenures, a politburo member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th tenures, a member of the Politburo's Standing Board (August 1999 - April 2001), and a member of the Party Central Committee in the tenures from the 7th to 13th.
In October 2018, Trong was elected as State President. He was Chairman of the National Assembly in the 11th and 12th tenures.
He has also been Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Head of the Central Steering Committee on Corruption Prevention and Control. Trong was a member of the National Assembly in the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14 tenures.
