The MLC is a sub-regional cooperation mechanism that was first proposed by Thailand in 2012, and was jointly established by six countries along the Mekong River, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
The overall goal of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation is to promote comprehensive cooperation towards building a responsible community for common interests in the sub-region.
The MLC is also designed to strengthen mutual trust and understanding, maintain peace and stability, and narrow the development gap in which, a major focus is placed on sustainable management and use of water resources in the Mekong River, and the enhancement of connectivity among the six countries.
Accordingly, member nations have agreed to implement cooperation content on three pillars, security - politics, economy and sustainable development, and culture - society and people-to-people exchanges.
Vietnam has actively participated in the cooperation mechanism since the first day of its establishment with its positive contributions to multiple fields of cooperation. The country has also become involved in building important, cooperation-oriented documents, and especially stepping up cooperation in water resource management, which has become a prioritized area of the Mekong-Lancang cooperation.
Amid the COVID-19 epidemic, Vietnam have actively engaged in a range of activities within the Mekong-Lancang cooperation, in which the nation has successfully organized the MLC Week 2020 in Hanoi.
Vietnam has stayed active in exchanging documents and action plans of MLC working groups on cross-border economic connectivity and cooperation, production capacity cooperation, management of water resources, in addition to participation in meetings of diplomatic working group as well as activities and training courses within the MLC framework.
