The objective of the project is to increase the wastewater treatment coverage in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province, by constructing urban wastewater treatment systems, thereby contributing to the improvement of public sanitation and sustainable development of the city and the outlying downstream area.
Dong Nai Province is undergoing remarkable industrialization, which has included the expansion of more than 200 Japanese companies. However, the sewerage has not been developed, and untreated wastewater generated in Bien Hoa City, the provincial capital, is discharged into the Dong Nai River, which is the source of water for Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam.
The water quality of the rivers and waterways flowing in Bien Hoa is no better than raw wastewater and the lack of a drainage system means that unsanitary water spills out during flooding, creating public sanitation problems such as bad odors, mosquitos, and flies.
