The smuggling and illegal transportation of foreign-made refined sugar across border gates of provinces of Long An, Dong Thap, An Giang tended to increase after the Lunar New Year 2022.
Competent forces have detected many smuggling sugar cases in large quantities.
Notably, the working team of Market Surveillance Team No.6 under Long An Market Surveillance Department seized two trucks transporting 200 bags of refined sugar with a total weight of 10 tons manufactured by foreign countries at Tan Hung District, Long An province. The two truck drivers did not present invoices and documents proving the origin of the sugar.
On February 16 at Tan Hung District, the Market Surveillance Team No.2 seized a truck driven by Tran Hoang Tai residing in Vinh Hung Town, Long An province transporting 49 bags of refined sugar (weighing 2.45 tons) without documents.
Driver Tran Hoang Tai said he bought the sugar and transported it to Tan Phuoc bus station in Ta Hong District, Dong Thap province to sell for profit.
At Dong Thap Border, the Customs Enforcement Team under the local customs department coordinated with the local Police in seizing about half a ton of refined sugar and 1,000 packs of foreign cigarettes at Muong Mieu wharf in Hong Ngu District.
At the same time, at Thong Binh Border Guard Station, the Working Team of Thong Binh Border Guard Station, Thong Binh Customs Enforcement Team and the local Police inspected and detected many refined sugar bags at Thong Binh commune.
The competent forces seized 22 bags of sugar with a total weight of 1.1 tons. All the smuggled sugar was transported from Cambodia to Thong Binh commune to ship inland for consumption. However, when detecting the competent forces, smugglers quickly moved and left goods at the scene.
Smuggling of black sugar
According to the assessment of competent forces, the smuggling of this item was insignificant, but this situation increases after the Lunar New Year. Smugglers often take advantage of the night to gather goods near the border area and then transport them inland. At the same time, they change the packaging to outsmart detection by the competent forces during transportation.
In addition, the forces seized cases of about 300-500kg at Dong Thap, An Giang Border Gates.
In the domestic market, in the days before, during and after the festival, the competent forces seized a large quantity of black sugar.
Recently, the Market Surveillance Team under Binh Duong Market Surveillance Team collaborated with local Police to inspect a truck stopped at an empty area in Thuan An city, Binh Duong province, and detected 6,192kg of BEKSUL black sugar. However, the origin of the goods was not shown on the product label. The vehicle owner also failed to present invoices and documents proving the origin of the goods.
Earlier on January 14, the competent agencies of Binh Duong province detected 840kg of DARK BROWN SUGAR at the business site of South Trade Manufacturing Material (in Hoa Long, Lai Thieu, Thuan An city, Binh Duong). The label showed the product of Tuan Cuong Phat Production, Trade and Service Co., Ltd., address 494B, Hau Giang, Ward 12, District 6, HCM City. However, when contacting the company’s representative, the competent authorities identified that all the products were fake.
According to the report of the Steering Committee 389 of Long An province, since the beginning of 2022, the smuggling and transportation of sugar across the provincial border has tended to increase compared with the same period in 2021. As of February 2022, the local competent forces detected and seized nearly 46 tons of smuggled refined sugar. On February 14, 2022, the People's Committee of Long An province issued a document directing the agencies of Border Guard, Police, Customs, Market Surveillance to strengthen control of trails and border crossings; inspect the transportation, trading of smuggled cigarettes and refined sugar in the domestic market; detect, arrest and handle organized smuggling rings; cases of illegal cross-border transportation and storage and trading of smuggled cigarettes and sugar. |
