The rice market improved by exporting through minor gates

The purchase contract of 293 thousand tons of rice from the Philippines is an opportunity for domestic enterprises to promote rice consumption.

At the Mekong Delta, the rice market in October fluctuated dramatically. According to statistics of localities, the rice price in some provinces in the Mekong was as follows: In An Giang, fresh IR50404 rice increased by 200 vnd per kilogram (from 4,200 vnd per kg to 4,400 vnd per kg); and OM 1490, 2514 high quality rice increased by 100 vnd per kilogram, from 4,600 vnd per kg to 4,700 vnd per kg.

In Bac Lieu province, Fall-Winter rice (short-term varieties) was stable at the price of 4200-4300 vnd per kilogram; OM 5451 and OM 6976 high quality rice was at 4000-4200 vnd per kilogram. In Kien Giang province, ordinary rice fell by 200 vnd per kilogram (from 5,100 vnd per kg to 4,900 vnd per kg); the price of long rice fell from 5,500 vnd per kg to 5,300 vnd per kg. In Vinh Long province, IR50404 dry rice was stable at 5,000 vnd per kilogram.

According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), Philippines enterprises are allowed to import 293,100 tons of rice from Vietnam to ensure food requirements for the pre-harvest season of 2017 by the Food Agency of Philippines. This is an opportunity for domestic enterprises to promote rice consumption in this context.

According to a report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, to the end of October, exported rice is estimated at 4.2 million tons with a value of $US 1.9 billion, a decrease of 21.2% in quantity and a decrease of 16.9% in value compared to the same period in 2015.

The average exported rice price in the first 9 months of 2016 reached $US 449 per ton, an increase of 4.8% compared to the same period in 2015. In the first 9 months of 2016, China was still ranked first in the total of import markets from Vietnam with 35.4% market share. Ghana was ranked second with 11% market share.

The US rejected 1700 tons of rice from Vietnam during January- April.

Notably, the Indonesian market was the 4th largest importer of Vietnamese rice in the first 9 months of 2016 with 8.2% market share. The exported rice to this market reached 359.4 thousand tons, equivalent to $US 142.5 million, increasing by 21.5 times in quantity and 22.5 times in value compared to the same period in 2015. The Angola market also increased by 4.4 times in quantity and 3.5 times in value.
