The National Council of Destruction carried out the destruction of more than 2 tons of ivory, 70 kg of rhino horns and some specimens from bear bones, and tiger bones through pulping and burning.
At the event, Mr. Ha Cong Tuan, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said: "The destruction of ivory and rhino horns is the final measure to deal with specimens illegally transported, showing the determination of Vietnam and the international community to prevent the illegal trade of ivory, rhino horns and products from other wildlife, which is also the message of the campaign on raising public awareness of consumers for not using illegal product from wild animals".
Mr. Giles Lever, the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Vietnam also stressed: "The UK appreciates the destruction for the first time in Vietnam of illegal products from wild animals. Along with the seizing of smuggled ivory recently, this event is showing positive signs of the commitment of Vietnam in the fight against illegal trafficking of plant and wildlife. We hope this event is a good start to step further in the inventory, analysis and disposal of products from wild animals which are currently stored".
In fact, since joining the CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) in 1994, Vietnam has made efforts with the international community to actively enforce this Convention.
In recent years, in addition to the improvement of policies and legislation in the management of wildlife trade, Vietnamese authorities have discovered, investigated and seized dozens of tons of ivory, hundreds of kgs of rhino horns and tiger specimens, such as bones, pangolin scales, and freshwater turtles, etc.
Vietnam's efforts in the fight against illegal trade of wild animals are appreciated by the world community, which raises Vietnam's position in the world.
