Given the strong development of the textile and garment industry, Vietnam is currently the third largest cotton importer in the world with consumption output of about 1.5 million tons per year.Of which, the volume of cotton imported from the US accounts for over 50%. In 2019 alone, more than 800,000 tons of cotton was imported from the US, accounting for 60% of total import volume. As of July 2020, there was nearly 600,000 tons of US cotton imported into Vietnam, accounting for about 65% of the total import volume. Currently, Vietnam imports 25%of the total US export cotton and is the largest cotton importer.

According to Mr. Vo Manh Hung, chief representative of CCI in Vietnam, with the use of US cotton, the quality of Vietnam's textile and garment products has also improved, and Vietnamese enterprises are also more interested in using US cotton. In recent years, the rate of US cotton imports has been increasing, up by 20% -30% in some years, from 100-200,000 tons to 800,000 tons at present.

Mr. Vu Duc Giang, Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), also said that the increasing demand for US cotton was because Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises had to meet the market's requirement of producing fabrics made from US cotton. In addition, the quality of US cotton is relatively stable, the close cooperation between the CCI and VITAS as well as active support activities of the CCI and US cotton exporters to the Vietnamese spinning mills is also the reason for the increasing rate of US cotton use in Vietnam.

CCI has continuously implemented activities to support Vietnamese spinning mills by visits tofactories to learn from each other about experience, management technology and approaches to cotton products in many different countries. In addition, in order to support enterprises to gain the most effective use of US cotton, the CCI also regularly assists enterprises in the assessment of factories, production processes as well as market information.

Cotton Day Vietnam, held in September every year, attracts the participation of hundreds of enterprises and partners in the Vietnamese fashion industry and textile and garment industry and is also a good opportunity for businesses to seek cooperation with US cotton exporters as well as get more useful information from experts.

At Cotton Day Vietnam 2020, CCI has providedthe latest information on the US cotton industry; export policies, product criteria of US cotton for Vietnamese enterprises; and support enterprises in terms of market, experience, technology, administration and market connection from CCI to Vietnamese enterprises. Thereby, fashion brands and enterprises in the Vietnamese textile and garment industry can seek opportunities for cooperation and choose reliable partners.

Mr. Hung affirmed that, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the CCI will continue to support Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises in terms of market, experience, technology, management and consuming market for Vietnamese enterprises.
