On 19th April in Ha Noi, Institute for Research on Development Communication (RED) under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association, held a workshop named “Digital safety for journalists”. At the workshop, Dr. Vu Tuan Anh, a lecturer at Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, said that in 2016 there were 145, 000 cyber-attacks on Vietnam’s information system with three main types, including phishing, malware and interface change, causing damage of over VND 10,400 billion. Over 10,000 websites and portals with the domain name “vn” were attacked and taken control of, changing the interface and installing malware, and over 70% of computers were infected.
According to the Vietnam Center for Emergency Response Computer, in the first quarter of 2017, there were nearly 7,700 cyber-attacks on Vietnam's Websites. In July 2016, the network system of Vietnam Airlines was attacked under the APT form, affecting over 100 flights and leaking data of over 400,000 accounts of regular customers. In March 2017, Tan Son Nhat, Rach Gia, Tuy Hoa Airlines were attacked.
Dr. Vu Anh Tuan said that “the situation of intellectual property infringement, the stealing of technology and copyright on the internet is increasing, and the risk of network spying and cyber criminal activity has become complicated and dangerous. The internet environment is abused to publicize fabricated, unverifiable and dangerous information to slander and smear individuals and organizations, and implement destructive terrorist activities. Cyber-criminals’ tricks are becoming more complicated, sophisticated and dangerous with increasing levels of damage.
