In the first month of 2020, the total import-export value of the whole country was US$36.62 billion, down 18.4% over the previous month and down 16.2% over the same period in 2019 (the number of working days in the month was only 16 due to the Lunar New Year holiday).

Of which, the total export value was US$18.2 billion and the import value US$18.42 billion. Thus, compared to December 2019, the total export value decreased by 19.4% and the import value 17.4%. With this result, the country's trade balance of goods in the first month of 2020 had a deficit of US$232 million, contrary to the surplus trend of January 2019.

Statistics showed that the total import-export value with China in January was estimated at US$8.29 billion, down 25.8% compared to December 2019 and down 11.8% compared to the same period in 2019. Of which, exports reached US$2.75 billion, down 35.3% and imports US$5.54 billion, down 20.1%.A decline of 25% in tax revenue of the Customs sector in January was due to the influence of the coronavirus outbreak in China, delayingimports and exports of goods with China in some northern border provinces. Another causewas the Lunar New Year fallingin January 2020.

Statistics of the average value by working days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays) in January 2020, Vietnam's export value to China reached US$130.52 million per day, down by 20.18% compared to December 2019 but up by 18.5% compared to the same period in 2019.

Meanwhile, the import value of goods from China in January 2020 on an average day only reached US$261.47 billion per day, down 6.5% compared to December 2019 and down 2.1% compared to January 2019.

Accordingly, in the three working days after the Lunar New Year holiday (January 30, January 31, and February 3, 2020), the total average export value of Vietnam to China reached only US$82.1 million per day, equaling63% of the normal working day in January. Meanwhile, imports reached US$182.8 million per day, only equal to 70% of a normal working day in January.
