Major imported commodity groups in the first quarter of 2017

VCN - According to the General Department of Customs, this is the first time that the number of imported goods of over $ US 1 billion turnovers increased up to the number of 10 commodity groups in the first three months only. Total import value of these 10 commodity groups was over $ US 30 billion, accounting for 65% of the country’s total import turnover in the first quarter of 2017.

10 largest imported commodity groups in the first three months of 2017 compared with those in the first three months of 2016.

Machinery, equipment and spare parts: The imports of this commodity group in this month reached $ US 3.26 billion, up 29.7% over the previous month. Thereby, bringing the total import value of this commodity group in the first three months of 2017 to $ US 8.07 billion, up 35.9% and up to $ US 2.13 billion. Of which, the import value of the FDI group was $ US 4.86 billion, up $ US 1.55 billion and the domestic enterprise group imported $ US 3.21 billion, up $ US 585 million.

In the first quarter of 2017, this commodity group was mainly imported from China with $ US 2.53 billion, up 34%; from Korea with $ US 2.33 billion, up 104%; from Japan with $ US1.05 billion, up 10.7% ... compared to the first quarter of 2016.

Computers, electronic products, and components: the import turnover in March 2017 was $ US 2.99 billion, up 20.1% over the previous month, bringing the import turnover of this commodity group in the first three months of 2017 to more than $ US 7.6 billion, up 16.6% over the same period last year.

Computers, electronic products, and components were mainly imported to Vietnam from: South Korea with $ US 2.69 billion, up 27.9% over the same period last year; from China with $ US 1.58 billion, up 28.5%; from Taiwan with $ US 773 million, up 7.9%;

Telephone and accessories: The import value of this commodity group in March 2017 reached more than 1.14 billion USD, up by 19.8% over the previous month. Import turnover of this group in the first quarter 2017 reached more than 2.93 billion, up 22.6% over the same period last year.

Telephone and components imported into Vietnam in the first quarter of 2017 mainly originated from: China with nearly $ US 1.61 billion, up 7.5% over the same period last year; Korea with nearly $ US 1.03 billion, up by 33.4%.

Iron and steel: In March 2017, the volume of imported iron and steel reached over 1.91 million tons worth nearly $ US 873 million, up by 26.2% in volume and 5% in value, bringing imported volume of this group in the first quarter of 2017 to over 4.63 million tons worth nearly $ US 2.36 billion, up by 1.1% in volume and 41.6% in value over the same period last year.

Iron and steel imported to Vietnam in the first quarter of 2017 mainly originated from China with more than 2.21 million tons worth nearly $ US 1.18 billion, down by 10.8% in volume and up by 40. 7% in value over the same period last year; from Japan with 529,000 tons worth $ US 315 million, down by 11.2% in volume and up by 29.6% in value; from Korea with 417.000 tons worth $ US 293 million, down by 2.5% in volume and up by 41.3% in value; particularly, iron and steel originated from India sharply increased over the same period with 439.000 tons worth $ US 227 million, up by 47 times in volume and 22 times in value.

Cashew nuts: The amount of imported cashew nuts imported in March 2017 was 76.100 tons, up 50.3% over the previous month. As a result, bringing the total imports of cashew nuts in the first quarter of 2017 to 176.000 tons, valued at $ US 363 million, sharply increasing by 64.4% in volume and 115.3% in value compared to the first quarter of 2016.

A number of cashew nuts imported in the first quarter 2017 were mainly from Tanzania with 93.600 tons, 3 times higher than the same quarter in 2015; from Cambodia with 46.800 tons, slightly decreasing by 1.9%; and from Indonesia with 11.900 tons, down by 52.9% ...

Complete Build Up (CBU) automobiles: In March 2017, the country imported more than 11,000 automobiles, valued at $ US 180 million, up 39.3% in volume and 13.9% in value compared to the last month. As a result, by the end of March 2017, the country imported nearly 26.500 CBU automobiles, valued at $ US 488 million, up 34.4 % in volume but only up by 1 % in value over the same period last year.

Of which, the import of cars with less than 9 seats were 16.310 units, increasing by 136% and accounting for nearly 62% of the country’s total imported; imported trucks reached more than 8.800 units, decreasing by 10.2%; imported cars with more than 9 seats were 170 units, decreasing by 10.2% and other cars were 1.2 00 units, decreasing by 56.1%.

The volume of automobiles imported from ASEAN countries in the first three months of 2017 was 14.460 units, up by 67.6% over the same period of 2016. Of which automobiles imported from Thailand were 10.050 units, up by 28.8% and from Indonesia were 4.400 units, compared to the imported automobiles of 833 units in the same period last year.

In addition, over the first three months of 2017, CBU automobiles imported from India increased 4 times with nearly 4.800 units.

Coal: the volume of imported coal in March 2017 reached nearly 2 million tons, valued at $ US 217 million, up by 76.9% in volume and 47.8% in value. By the end of the first quarter of 2017, the country imported 3.61 million tons valued at $ US 410 million, up by 4.6% in volume and up by 95.8% in value over the same period in 2016.

In the first three months of 2017, Vietnam imported coal from two main markets: Russia with 1.26 million tons, up 14.5%; and Indonesia with 1.07 million tons, up 132% over the first quarter of 2016.

Petroleum: The volume of imported petroleum in March 2017 was nearly 1.3 million tons, worth $ US 662 million, up 65.5% in volume and up 54% in value over the previous month. Of which, the petroleum was increasingly imported from the Singapore market with 481,000 tons, up 26.4%; from Malaysia with 368 thousand tons, up by 191.1%; from Korea with 305 thousand tons, up by 89.1%, and from China with 122 thousand tons, by up 83.8%.

Until the end of the first quarter of 2016, the country’s total volume of imported petroleum was 2.95 million tons, valued at nearly $ US 1.59 billion, up by 7.2 % in volume and 74.6 % in value against the same period last year.
