Dong Thap Customs busts two cases of cigarette smuggling, seizing nearly 2,500 packages

At dawn on May 21, 2022, receiving information about a boat carrying contraband foreign cigarettes across the border to Vietnam, the Customs Enforcement Team worked with the Thuong Lac Commune Police to patrol So Thuong river bank, opposite Thuong Lac Junior High School in Group 9, Hamlet 1, Thuong Lac Commune, Hong Ngu District, Dong Thap Province, the authorities seized 1,400 packages of foreign cigarettes, said Dong Thap Customs Department.

All above cigarettes are contained in six nylon bags transported by a man by a canoe from Cambodia to Vietnam and then to Hong Ngu city for consumption. When detecting the forces, the man abandoned the goods and escaped to Cambodia.

In addition, a few hours later, the Customs Enforcement Team coordinated with the An Binh A ward police to seize another 1,000 packages of smuggled foreign cigarettes in An Hoa cluster area, An Binh A ward, Hong Ngu city.

These cigarettes were transported by a motorcyclist from the border to the land in the above area. When detecting the control team, the man also abandoned the goods and escaped towards Tam Nong district.
