Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of January, 2018

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/01/2018) of January-2018, Vietnam’s total exports of US dollars 9.26 billion and imports of US dollars 9.56 billion resulted in a trade deficit of US dollars 303 million. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of January was US dollars 18.82 billion, shrunk by 5.9% as compared to the second half of December - 2017.

In the view of Foreign Direct Invested (FDI) traders, the total value of exportation and importation in the first half of January reached USD 12.4 billion up by 32% as compared to same period of 2017 (equal to USD 3.1 billion)

Export:

When compared with the second half of December - 2017, export of first half of January decreased by 8.4% (equally USD 848 million), mostly as a result of the decline registered in following products: textiles and garments (down by 15.2% - USD 198 million equally); fishery products(down by 27.3% USD 105 million equally); irons and steels (down by 45.5% ,USD 95 million equally)…

It was also showed by Vietnam Customs Statistics that export value of some commodities widen in the first half of January, which included: rice (up by 89.3%, USD 59 million equally); telephones, mobile phones and part thereof (up by 1.3%, USD 28 million equally); means of transports (up by 7.8%, USD 24 million equally); petroleum products (up by 63.9%, USD 22 million equally).​

Import:

In the first half of January 2018, import decreased by 3.4% (USD 339 million equally) when compared with second half of December - 2017, mainly reflecting the shrunk of petroleum products (down by 44.1% , USD 195 million equally); telephones, mobile phones and part thereof (down by 17,6%, USD 181 million equally); machines, equipments, tools and instruments (down by 17.6%, USD 181 million equally); motor vehicles (down by 10.2%, USD 160 million equally); …

Widen occurred in importation of some commodities such as: animal fodders and animal fodder materials (up by 75,7%, USD 80 million equally); wheat (up by 136.7% - USD 54 million equally); cashew nuts (up by 61%, USD 46 million equally), corn (up by 96.6%, USD 44 million equally) …

According to trade statistics of Vietnam Customs, in February 2023, a 5.9% upwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam was recorded as compared to the result of the last month.
